AI Squeezes Graduate Hiring in Texas Data Center Boom

Texas has emerged as a hub for America’s AI data-center buildout, but the infrastructure boom is not translating into broader white-collar hiring. Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas economists Samuel Dodini and Tucker Smith linked millions of Lightcast job postings with an automation-exposure measure based on actual use of Anthropic’s Claude and tasks catalogued by O*NET. The analysis suggests recent college graduates are among the first workers affected because online vacancies tend to require limited prior experience.

The Dallas Fed said on Sept. 1, 2026, that postings for more AI-exposed occupations had fallen 5% relative to less-exposed roles by the end of 2023, with the gap widening to about 8% by the first quarter of 2025. Existing firms cut postings for exposed jobs by 8% to 9% by early 2026. The researchers estimated AI automation reduced total Lightcast postings in Texas by about 1.8% in 2024 and 2.6% in 2025, indicating that incumbent employers, rather than only AI-native startups, are reshaping labor demand.

Stanford Digital Economy Lab researchers, working with payroll provider ADP, examined records covering millions of U.S. workers to assess labor-market shifts since generative AI became widely available. The study found no evidence of broad, economy-wide job displacement. Instead, weakness was concentrated among early-career workers in occupations built around codified knowledge and tasks that AI can automate. Experienced employees relying more on tacit knowledge, along with jobs where AI augments rather than replaces workers, were comparatively resilient.

In a revision released on August 12, 2026, using data through June, employment among 22- to 25-year-olds in highly AI-exposed occupations stood 19% below the level implied by growth among less-exposed peers. In absolute terms, employment for young workers in the two most-exposed occupation groups fell about 11% from November 2022, while the three least-exposed groups grew roughly 10%. Stanford said the widening gap primarily reflected reduced hiring, not increased separations, while cautioning that the descriptive evidence does not establish AI as the sole cause.
