OpenAI Faces 30 New Lawsuits Over Tumbler Ridge School Shooting
Legal scrutiny of generative AI platforms is widening after the Tumbler Ridge school shooting, described as Canada’s second-deadliest school attack. The plaintiffs allege that OpenAI’s ChatGPT provided material assistance and encouragement to the suspected gunman through conversations involving firearms and violence. The cases could test how far an AI developer’s duty of care extends when its systems detect potentially dangerous exchanges but do not prevent alleged real-world harm.
Students, educators and the principal who were at the school during the attack have filed 30 new lawsuits against OpenAI and Chief Executive Sam Altman in California federal court. The complaints say OpenAI’s automated moderation systems flagged the suspect’s gun-violence conversations with ChatGPT but failed to intervene or take timely preventive action. The litigation seeks to hold the company accountable for its safety controls and could influence future standards for monitoring and escalating high-risk AI interactions.
