Waymo Recalls Nearly 3,900 Self-Driving Cars Over Failure to Recognize Construction Signs
Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous-driving unit, has offered passenger service on highways since November 2025. The issue involves how its fifth-generation autonomous-driving system recognizes and prioritizes risks in construction zones. Vehicles could pass ramp-closure signs or traffic cones and continue traveling at highway speeds, highlighting the safety and regulatory challenges robotaxis face when road conditions change temporarily.
Waymo decided on the recall on June 8, 2026, reporting 3,871 vehicles to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Six incidents occurred in Phoenix in April, followed by another seven in the San Francisco Bay Area on May 18. The company began a software update on June 16, resumed highway operations on June 25 and had updated all vehicles capable of driverless operation by June 29.
