Ravencoin Miners Seek Four-Day Rollback After Critical Exploit
Ravencoin, launched on Jan. 3, 2018 from Bitcoin’s codebase, is a proof-of-work network designed for issuing and transferring digital assets. The incident matters because a deep chain reorganization would challenge the practical finality that users expect from a blockchain. Replacing four days of history could invalidate not only malicious blocks but also legitimate payments, mining rewards and exchange settlements recorded during the same period.
As of Aug. 12, an attacker had exploited a critical software flaw to inject invalid blocks into Ravencoin, prompting two major mining pools to try to rebuild the chain from a pre-exploit state dating to about Aug. 8. The proposed rollback could erase as much as four days of transactions. RVN fell as much as 20%, while several exchanges suspended deposits and withdrawals. No dollar loss has been disclosed, and the reorganization’s success remained uncertain.
