Anthropic-Physical Intelligence Takeover Talk Roils AI Community
Anthropic has completed four known acquisitions in 2026, while OpenAI has bought at least 17 companies since 2023, as both race to turn frontier models into products and enterprise revenue. Physical Intelligence is a strategically significant target: the San Francisco robotics startup, co-founded by Lachy Groom, former Google researchers and Stanford and UC Berkeley professors, has raised more than $1 billion. Its π0.5 foundation model is widely used in robotics research, and a deal could give Anthropic a shortcut into embodied AI.
A weekend post on X by technology blogger Robert Scoble triggered speculation that Anthropic was acquiring Physical Intelligence. Chief Executive Karol Hausman subsequently told employees the reports were untrue, but a July 22 report said the companies had held acquisition talks in spring 2026. Physical Intelligence was also discussing a fresh $1 billion funding round at an $11 billion valuation. No transaction has been confirmed, while OpenAI’s existing investment in the robotics startup could complicate any prospective deal.
