Publishers Rethink Google Access as AI Erodes Search Traffic

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-25 · Last active 2026-07-25

For two decades, publishers accepted Google’s crawling and indexing in return for referral traffic that supported advertising and subscriptions. That bargain is fraying as AI Overviews and other answer products satisfy more queries inside Google, reducing clicks to source sites. The “Google Zero” scenario matters because publishers may still supply the material that improves search and trains AI while receiving less audience and revenue, undermining the economics of the open web.

By July 2026, Reddit was weighing whether to renew a 2024 content-licensing agreement that pays about $60 million a year and lets Google use its posts for AI. Semrush data show U.S. organic Google traffic to USA Today fell nearly 50% from June 2025 to June 2026; Politico dropped 23%, CNN 25%, and Business Insider more than 85%. USA Today Co., Reuters, Politico, The Economist and People Inc. are among publishers reassessing Google’s crawler access as referrals decline, raising the prospect of blocking or tighter licensing terms.

Reddit Weighs Cutting Google Access Over AI Content Use2026-07-22 · 1 reports · similarity 0.82

Reddit’s vast archive of continuously updated, human-written discussions has become valuable to search engines and generative AI developers. The company expanded its partnership with Google on Feb. 22, 2024, giving the technology group structured access to posts and comments through its Data API. The arrangement, reported at roughly $60 million a year, allowed Google to improve search products and train models, making it a test case for pricing online content and traffic referrals.

Reddit has discussed restricting or ending Google’s access to its content for AI use, according to a July 22, 2026, report, though no decision has been made. The deliberations come as publishers question whether search visibility compensates for content used in AI answers that may reduce click-through traffic. Semrush data cited in the report showed organic U.S. Google traffic to USA Today fell by nearly half between June 2025 and June 2026.
