Former xAI Founding Member Details 36-Hour, Nearly Sleepless Push to Launch Grok
Elon Musk founded xAI, which launched the generative AI model Grok in 2023 to compete with companies including OpenAI and Google. Former founding member Toby Pohlen said the development experience reflected xAI’s pursuit of extremely rapid product iteration through clear goals, a small and highly capable team, and centralized decision-making.
Pohlen recently recalled the final sprint before Grok’s 2023 release, saying the team spent 36 consecutive hours coding, integrating and launching the product at Musk’s direction, with almost no sleep. He described the atmosphere as “no caffeine, only adrenaline” and revealed the company’s “hardcore” engineering culture of demanding intense commitment.
