Agentic commerce allows AI agents to shop and complete purchases with consumers' authorization, making secure payment credentials and a full range of payment options essential. Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs) let agents pay using consumers' preferred methods without accessing the underlying credentials. Global buy now, pay later (BNPL) transaction volume has exceeded $300 billion, and Stripe says offering BNPL at eligible checkouts can increase revenue by up to 14%.

Klarna and Stripe announced on March 3, 2026, that SPTs will support Klarna's flexible payment options. The feature will initially be available in the United States to merchants that already offer Klarna through Stripe. Merchants will not need an additional integration, provided their AI shopping agents allow BNPL options to appear at checkout. The companies said the feature was coming soon but did not disclose the value of the partnership or an exact launch date.

Affirm and Stripe have worked together since 2021, initially bringing buy now, pay later, or BNPL, to online checkout and Stripe Terminal. As AI agents begin finding products and placing orders for consumers, their ability to recognize secure payment credentials and installment options will be critical to the global BNPL transaction market, which exceeds $300 billion.

Affirm announced on March 3, 2026, that it would support Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens, or SPT. Once authorized by a user, an AI agent can complete an eligibility check, select a fixed installment plan and make a payment within the platform. Stripe processes the transaction without exposing sensitive credentials. Plans are available with APRs as low as 0%. Merchants using Stripe directly will be the first to gain access, with support for other merchants expected to expand later in the year.
