Google Shifts Pixel Production as China’s AI Challengers Gain Ground
Google is treating hardware supply-chain risk and AI competition as linked tests of technology strategy. Pixel production has long depended on China, but Washington-Beijing tensions have pushed electronics groups to diversify across Asia. At the same time, Chinese developers including Moonshot AI and DeepSeek are challenging Google, OpenAI and Anthropic with lower-cost, open-weight models, shifting the contest beyond benchmark leadership to distribution, pricing and developer adoption.
Nikkei Asia reported on Aug. 18 that Google had told suppliers it planned to move production of all Pixel smartphones, watches and wireless earbuds out of China from 2027, with Vietnam and India set to gain work. The company is targeting an 8% to 10% increase in Pixel phone shipments in 2026, from about 12 million units in 2025 to roughly 13 million. Moonshot AI’s July 17 release of the 2.8 trillion-parameter, open-weight Kimi K3 has meanwhile intensified pressure on U.S. rivals over cost and access.
