Hyundai Buys Out Boston Dynamics as SoftBank Exits to Double Down on AI
Hyundai Motor Group acquired an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank in 2020 in a deal valuing the robotics company at about $1.1 billion, with SoftBank retaining the remaining 20%. Boston Dynamics, whose advanced robots include Atlas, is central to Hyundai’s plans to integrate automation into manufacturing, logistics and future mobility services.
In July 2026, Hyundai Motor Group spent another $325 million to acquire SoftBank’s remaining stake, raising its ownership of Boston Dynamics to 100%. The group plans to deploy Atlas humanoid robots at its electric-vehicle plants in 2028. SoftBank has now fully cashed out and is redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.
