Microsoft Unveils Work IQ Tools for Building Copilot Agent Plugins

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-11 · Last active 2026-08-11

Work IQ is the workplace intelligence layer behind Microsoft 365 Copilot, grounding AI agents in an organization’s data, permissions and working context so they can reason and act on business tasks. Plugins and Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectors extend those agents to outside tools and information. Microsoft’s new developer tooling matters because it addresses a persistent enterprise bottleneck: moving agent extensions from isolated prototypes into governed, testable software that can be published and maintained through standard engineering practices.

Microsoft released the developer preview of Work IQ Developer Tools on August 11, 2026, unifying the creation, validation, publishing and monitoring of Microsoft 365 Copilot plugins and agents. Developers can use natural-language instructions to have Copilot and other coding agents build plugins and MCP connectors. Real-time checks and automated evaluations are designed to catch configuration or quality problems, while support for existing CI/CD workflows brings the extensions into standard release pipelines. Microsoft did not disclose a timetable for general availability or pricing.
