A 2026 study by executive search firm Christian & Timbers estimates that only about 2,000 engineers in the United States combine industry know-how with hands-on applied AI experience. The firm forecasts demand for FDE talent will surge 2,100% as companies move beyond model selection and pilot projects into deployment across core workflows. The projected increase points to an acute supply gap and intensifying competition for engineers who can write production code, work directly with customers and keep implementations on track after launch.
