Reading involves more than reproducing where a person’s eyes move across a page. Aalto University in Finland and a multinational group of Asian researchers have developed an AI model grounded in resource rationality, treating attention as a limited resource allocated according to a reader’s characteristics and the value of available information. The approach matters because earlier systems largely sought to imitate observed eye-movement patterns without explaining the decisions behind them.
The newly reported model aims to predict how readers distribute attention across text while accounting for individual differences, moving beyond conventional eye-tracking simulation. The researchers did not disclose a commercialization date, funding amount or deployment timetable. Potential applications include layouts that adapt text for smart glasses and tools that automatically simplify legal documents for different readers, though the technology remains a research development rather than a released product.
