AI Demand Fuels Chip Shortage, Boosting Intel's Returns From Defective Dies

Generative AI is driving data-center expansion and a sharp increase in demand for server CPUs, while wafer-capacity and advanced-process constraints have tightened market supply. Intel is responding by repurposing functional but defective dies from wafer edges that had previously been slated for disposal. The company packages and grades the chips for sale, increasing shipment volumes and improving product returns.

Intel expanded sales of these so-called scrap chips in the first quarter of 2026 while raising server CPU prices to help fill the market gap created by AI infrastructure demand. Reports said the strategy had generated significant revenue growth, but did not disclose the defective chips' actual sales volume, prices or revenue, or the date of the price increases.
