Veir Advances Superconducting Cables for AI Power Boom

Electricity systems built for decades of relatively flat demand in wealthy economies are being stretched by AI computing, electric vehicles and heat pumps. Bloomberg estimates global power consumption could double by 2050, raising the stakes for countries whose aging grids face long permitting cycles and limited urban space. Superconducting cables, which can carry far more current than copper or aluminum without resistive heating, are emerging as a potential solution for dense data-center campuses and city networks.

Bloomberg highlighted Veir’s work on May 27, 2026, as the startup sought to commercialize cables cooled with liquid nitrogen to about 77 kelvin, where the material operates with virtually no resistance. During a 2025 visit, Veir was producing 10-meter sections that took roughly two weeks each, underscoring the manufacturing challenge. One cable could replace several conventional lines, while Microsoft has joined Veir’s $75 million Series B funding round to help advance the technology for data-center power delivery.
