Sam Altman’s World ID Strikes Deals With Major Brands Including Gap

Tools for Humanity, co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania in 2019, uses its Orb devices to scan faces and irises for World ID. The system converts those features into on-device cryptographic credentials, allowing users to prove they are unique human beings without disclosing their identities. Generative AI has increased the prevalence of bots, deepfakes and fraudulent impersonation, making this verification layer more important, though biometric privacy remains controversial.

On February 26, 2026, Tools for Humanity disclosed that it had installed an Orb at a Gap store in San Francisco. Gap is only providing the location and has not adopted World ID. Thousands of people applied after Tinder began testing the service in Japan, while Visa is developing a payment card that can be used to spend digital assets including Worldcoin. On April 17, World released its 4.0 upgrade and expanded integrations with Zoom, DocuSign and Tinder.
