UK Plans G7’s First Digital Sovereign Bond by Early 2027

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-15 · Last active 2026-07-15

The UK plans to launch its first digital sovereign bond in a move aimed at accelerating the digitization of financial markets. Combining a traditional sovereign debt instrument with modern financial technology will test whether distributed ledger technology can make bond issuance more efficient, shorten settlement times and reduce operating costs. Research estimates that full implementation of financial-market tokenization could add as much as £33 billion to the UK’s annual economic output by 2035.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves announced on July 14, 2026, that the UK would issue its first digital government bond by early 2027. An official issuance amount has not been disclosed, though market estimates put the initial size at £1 billion–£2 billion. The bond will be issued on HSBC’s Orion platform within the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority’s Digital Securities Sandbox. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey also confirmed that officials would explore making it eligible collateral for future market operations.
