CarParts.com, CarGurus Turn Proprietary Data Into AI Moats
Generative AI has made frontier models readily accessible to new entrants, but CarParts.com and CarGurus say their harder-to-replicate advantage lies in proprietary industry data. CarParts.com draws on more than 30 years of vehicle-fitment, purchasing, returns and supplier information, reinforced by its distribution network. CarGurus, founded in 2006, converts billions of monthly site interactions into market signals and predictive tools for dealers and consumers.
Both companies reported second-quarter 2026 results on Aug. 6. CarParts.com revenue fell 10.7% to $135.6 million, though adjusted EBITDA improved to $1.8 million, its highest since the third quarter of 2023. CarGurus revenue rose 13% to $251.0 million and adjusted EBITDA reached $84.7 million. The company also introduced Guru, a consumer-facing AI layer designed to guide shoppers across the vehicle-buying journey.
