Anthropic Enlists Clergy to Explore Claude’s Ethical and Moral Development
Anthropic aims to design Claude to “act like a person with deeply developed ethical judgment,” bringing the chatbot’s character and values into its safety governance. As AI increasingly responds to grief, risks of self-harm and questions of faith, engineering rules alone struggle to cover every situation. Participation from religious and philosophical communities is therefore seen as an important addition to moral oversight.
In late March 2026, Anthropic held a two-day summit at its San Francisco headquarters for 15 Catholic and Protestant leaders and scholars. They discussed whether Claude could have emotions, spiritual value and dynamic ethical reasoning. On May 25, co-founder Chris Olah warned at the Vatican that mass unemployment would create a moral responsibility of “historic proportions,” calling for joint oversight by religious groups, governments and civil society. The event involved no transaction amount.
