Trump Plans May China Visit for Summit With Xi on Iran and Trade

U.S.-China relations have long been shaped by tariffs, technology restrictions and geopolitical rivalry, while the situation in Iran and shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz directly affect global energy supplies and oil prices. If Trump’s trip goes ahead, it would be the first visit to China by a U.S. president in nearly a decade. The Beijing summit would also provide an important venue for Washington and Beijing to coordinate on trade and Middle East issues.

Trump said he expects to visit Beijing on May 14–15 and hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping that could be “historic.” He said Xi was “very happy” about the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The agenda will include an Iran peace agreement, U.S.-China trade negotiations and tariff arrangements, but no specific agreements or amounts have yet been announced.
