Open Banking Growth Outpaces Developer Integration

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-20 · Last active 2026-08-20

Open banking allows customers to authorize financial institutions to share data through APIs, supporting new credit, payment and money-management products. Banco Central do Brasil’s Open Finance Brasil has become one of the world’s largest implementations. Yet the infrastructure’s rapid expansion has exposed a widening execution gap, as companies and developers struggle with regulatory access, integration, testing and the work required to turn available APIs into products customers can use.

As of May 2026, Brazil’s system connected more than 100 million customers and held over 154 million active consents, while institutions exchanged billions of messages each week. Cumbuca said only about 3% of Brazilian companies were connected to open finance, compared with roughly 20% in the UK. The fintech’s developer Playground aims to reduce that barrier; its work with Juspay helped the payments company enter Brazil 12 to 18 months sooner than initially projected.
