OpenAI Open-Sources Plant Talk, Bringing ChatGPT Voice Interaction to Houseplants
Plant Talk is an open-source project showcasing the potential of AI-assisted development by using ChatGPT to give indoor plants a voice interface. The system can provide care recommendations based on plant images and environmental information, extending generative AI beyond text-based queries into smart-home applications. OpenAI has not disclosed development costs or pricing.
As of July 20, 2026, OpenAI had made Plant Talk’s source code available on GitHub, though related materials did not specify an exact launch date. The basic version uses a camera to assess a plant’s condition. The advanced version can connect to Arduino sensors, read soil-moisture and light data, and have ChatGPT respond by voice with guidance on the plant’s care needs.
