Coinbase Launches UK Derivatives Trading for Professional Investors
Coinbase secured UK authorization under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive on July 7, 2026, allowing the US-listed exchange to expand beyond spot crypto trading into regulated investment services. The approval is strategically important because the Financial Conduct Authority has barred the sale of crypto derivatives to retail consumers since 2021, leaving professional clients as the addressable market. The move also advances Coinbase’s push to build an “Everything Exchange” and broaden fee revenue beyond the more cyclical spot business.
Coinbase opened the service to qualifying UK professional investors on Aug. 11, offering futures, perpetual contracts and options across cryptocurrencies, commodities, equities and foreign exchange. The initial lineup spans more than 170 contracts, with leverage of as much as 50 times on selected crypto perpetuals. Trading is not available to UK retail customers. The launch follows the July authorization and gives institutional and sophisticated investors access to a wider derivatives suite through Coinbase’s regulated framework.

The history behind this eventCoinbase Launches 24/5 U.S. Stock Trading for UK Users
Coinbase is expanding beyond crypto into traditional securities as it pursues its “Everything Exchange” strategy, which aims to bring digital assets, equities and eventually tokenized products under one account. The UK is a key overseas market for the U.S.-listed exchange, and adding cash equities deepens its effort to connect conventional finance with onchain markets while putting it into more direct competition with retail brokerages and multi-asset trading platforms.
Beginning Aug. 6, 2026, Coinbase started progressively rolling out access for UK customers to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks. The service offers commission-free trading 24 hours a day, five days a week, fractional shares from £1, and funding in pounds or USDC. The launch follows Coinbase’s July 7 UK investment-services authorization, which opened the door to equities and derivatives. Bitcoin traded near $65,000 as the rollout was reported.
Coinbase Secures UK License to Expand Into Equities and Derivatives
Coinbase, whose core business has been spot cryptocurrency trading, is working to create an “everything exchange” that combines digital assets and traditional securities in a single account. The UK is a major overseas market for the company, but its CB Payments unit was fined £3,503,546 by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on July 23, 2024, for serving high-risk customers. Securing broader authorization therefore carries both regulatory and commercial significance.
Coinbase announced on July 7, 2026, that it had secured FCA authorization to provide investment services under a MiFID license, marking its largest-ever product expansion in the UK. UK retail customers will be able to trade equities on Coinbase for the first time, while institutional and advanced traders will gain access to perpetual contracts linked to cryptocurrencies, equities and commodities. The company said the products would be rolled out gradually but did not provide a firm launch date.
Coinbase Opens Global Crypto Derivatives Markets to US Institutional Clients
Crypto derivatives account for about 80% of global crypto trading volume, but US institutions seeking to trade offshore options and perpetual futures have often had to establish separate overseas entities. Coinbase completed its acquisition of Deribit on Aug. 14, 2025, for about $2.9 billion, comprising $700 million in cash and 11 million Coinbase shares.
Coinbase said on May 29, 2026, that Coinbase Financial Markets had become the first regulated futures commission merchant to offer such services under US Commodity Futures Trading Commission guidance. Open interest in Deribit’s Bitcoin options exceeded $31 billion as of May 28. Options are now available, with perpetual futures to be rolled out gradually.
Coinbase Rolls Out Regulated Crypto Futures Trading in 26 European Countries
European investors have often turned to unregulated platforms to trade cryptocurrency derivatives because of regulatory complexity. Coinbase’s new service is offered through MiFID-regulated Coinbase Financial Services Europe Ltd., bringing futures within a compliant framework. The rollout also advances its “Everything Exchange” strategy of combining crypto assets with traditional financial products.
Coinbase announced on March 9, 2026, that it was gradually opening the service to eligible Advanced users in 26 countries, including Germany and France. Products include Bitcoin and Solana futures, monthly and quarterly futures, five-year perpetual-style contracts, and Mag7 + Crypto Index futures. Some contracts offer leverage of up to 10 times, while others offer four to five times leverage. Fees start at 0.02%, and accounts can be funded in euros or USDC.
