Google introduced NotebookLM as Project Tailwind at its I/O developer conference in 2023, building an AI research tool that answers questions from user-selected sources and turns material into formats including audio and video summaries. The service has since attracted more than 30 million users and over 600,000 organizations. Bringing the product under the Gemini name signals a tighter role in Google's AI ecosystem while preserving its source-grounded research focus and standalone app.

Google said on July 16, 2026, it was renaming NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, with the new name and logo rolling out across interfaces and availability potentially taking more than 15 days. A secure cloud computer now lets each notebook write and execute code for source-grounded data analysis. The feature is available to Google AI Ultra users and eligible Workspace business customers, and is due to reach all Pro users on the web in the coming weeks. Notebooks already sync with the Gemini app and will be added to Google Search's AI Mode.
