Memory Giants Scrap In-House CXL Controllers, Boosting Chip Designers

Compute Express Link, or CXL, is emerging as a key data-center standard, allowing processors, accelerators and memory to share a high-speed interconnect. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron Technology had explored developing controller chips in-house and bundling them with DRAM modules. The strategy promised tighter integration but risked undercutting their profitable DIMM franchises as customers increasingly favored architectures that separate the controller from memory.

The three memory suppliers have recently wound down their in-house CXL controller programs and are turning to third-party designs. The shift opens a new market for fabless chipmakers, with Marvell Technology and Montage Technology positioned among the main beneficiaries. Separating controller development from memory manufacturing could establish a more specialized supply chain, broaden product choice and accelerate the formation of a commercial CXL chip ecosystem.
