US Unveils AI-Designed Nuclear Weapons Test Vehicle
The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration, part of the Department of Energy, maintains the safety, security and reliability of the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile. Its Aires Tide flight-test vehicle was designed using artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to simulate performance under extreme conditions, highlighting the growing role of computational engineering in sensitive national-security programs.
The NNSA said Aires Tide has been developed and successfully flight-tested, with the program moving seven times faster than a conventional development cycle. Costs were about 6.6% of those associated with traditional manufacturing methods, or roughly 15 times lower. The agency did not disclose a specific test date or dollar value for the project in the information provided.
