AI Power Boom Strains Grids, Fuels Transformer Shortage

The rapid buildout of generative AI and cloud computing is driving a sharp increase in electricity demand from large data centers, forcing governments and utilities to reassess generation, transmission and distribution networks. Transformers, which regulate voltage and help maintain grid reliability, have emerged as a critical constraint because manufacturing capacity has not kept pace with orders. The shortage could delay data-center connections and complicate efforts to expand AI computing infrastructure.

Buyers are increasingly competing for transformers as delivery schedules lengthen worldwide. In the United States, tighter scrutiny of Chinese-made power equipment is also prompting customers to seek alternative suppliers. Taiwanese heavy-electrical manufacturers are pursuing opportunities in North America and other overseas markets, using faster delivery as a competitive advantage.
