Tanzania Mobile Money Pushes Beyond Payments
Since Vodacom Tanzania launched M-PESA in 2008, mobile money has expanded beyond person-to-person transfers and bill payments into savings, credit, salary disbursement, supplier settlement and capital-market investing. In a country where conventional bank access remains uneven, the platforms have become a core layer of financial infrastructure for households, small businesses and farmers. That evolution matters because financial inclusion is increasingly being driven not merely by account access, but by how routinely Tanzanians use digital finance to participate in the broader economy.
The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority’s report for the quarter ended March 2026 showed mobile-money accounts rising 5.9% from December to about 80.98 million, while transaction volume climbed 7.4% to nearly 1.99 billion. By comparison, total telecom subscriptions increased 4.6% to 111.9 million and internet subscriptions rose just 1.5% to 58.9 million. The gap indicates that mobile money is deepening faster than basic connectivity, supporting the view that it has become infrastructure rather than an add-on service.
