Target Names Chandhu Nair as First Chief AI Officer

Target is creating a chief artificial intelligence officer position for the first time, elevating AI from a collection of technology initiatives to a companywide strategic priority. The move comes as major retailers deploy automation and data tools across inventory planning, supply chains, personalized marketing and customer service. Centralized leadership could help Target coordinate investment, governance and implementation as it seeks productivity gains and a stronger competitive position.

Target appointed former Lowe’s executive Chandhu Nair as its first chief AI officer, with Nair scheduled to take up the role on Aug. 24. He will oversee AI development and technology transformation across departments, giving one executive responsibility for coordinating the retailer’s strategy and deployment. Target did not disclose the size of its planned AI investment, Nair’s compensation or a timetable for specific projects.
