CEN, CENELEC Publish EN 18286 to Guide AI Act Compliance

The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act requires providers of high-risk systems to establish and maintain a documented quality management system under Article 17. The obligation spans regulatory compliance, design and development, data management, risk controls, testing, validation, technical documentation and post-market monitoring. The European Committee for Standardization, or CEN, and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, or CENELEC, developed EN 18286 to turn those legal duties into repeatable, auditable processes across an AI product’s lifecycle.

CEN and CENELEC announced the publication of EN 18286 on July 24, 2026, after the draft entered public enquiry on Oct. 30, 2025, and reached its final formal vote on May 14, 2026. Adoption remains voluntary. The European Commission must still assess whether the standard meets the AI Act’s objectives and legal requirements and then cite it in the Official Journal of the European Union. Once cited, companies using it would gain a presumption of conformity with Article 17.
