OpenRouter Launches Fusion API, Halving Costs as Multi-Model Inference Beats Standalone Leader
OpenRouter is a routing platform that integrates AI models from multiple providers. Its Fusion API lets developers run several models in parallel, with a Judge model evaluating and combining their answers. The design shifts the focus of competition from a single flagship model to a multi-model architecture that balances quality, cost and reliability.
OpenRouter launched the Fusion API in July 2026. Benchmark tests showed that a three-model combination approached Claude Fable 5 and outperformed it on some tasks, while cutting inference costs to about half. OpenRouter has not announced fixed dollar pricing; actual costs will depend on the models selected, token usage and Judge configuration.
