Agentic AI Travel Applications Gain Attention, With Model Context Protocol at Their Core
Airlines, hotels, online travel agencies and global distribution systems have long maintained separate control over inventory, identity, loyalty and payment data, while generative AI has largely added conversational interfaces to existing travel-booking processes. If the Model Context Protocol (MCP) can provide a common standard for agents to access data, maintain state and execute transactions, competition could shift from search pages to an auditable automated-execution layer.
A blizzard in the U.S. Northeast caused flight cancellations and travel disruption on February 23, 2026, prompting PYMNTS to focus on agentic AI coordination. Sabre, PayPal and Mindtrip had announced a partnership on February 12 to integrate real-time inventory, identity verification and payments. The product is scheduled to support airline tickets first in the second quarter before expanding to hotels. The companies did not disclose the investment value, while about 25% of consumers said they would let an AI agent plan their trips.
