Former Premier Sean Chen Urges Taiwan to Anchor Its AI Alliances

Geopolitical coalition-building is no longer confined to military and diplomatic affairs, but increasingly shapes technology, artificial intelligence supply chains and finance, former Taiwan Premier Sean Chen said. Initiatives such as the World AI Cooperation Organization, or WAICO, and the so-called “Silicon Renaissance” face pressure to align with major powers. That fragmentation raises the stakes for Taiwan, whose strategic importance rests heavily on semiconductors and its role in global technology networks.

In his latest comments, Chen urged Taiwan’s government to identify the strategic “support points” that can sustain its position as geopolitical competition intensifies. He said policymakers should assess the island’s leverage across AI, technology supply chains and finance, while determining which international partnerships offer durable backing. A broader strategy, rather than reliance on individual industries, is needed to clarify Taiwan’s role in emerging technology alliances and an increasingly divided global order, he said.
