Anthropic Launches Buddy AI Pet for Claude Code
Anthropic’s Claude Code is an AI coding tool for developers that primarily helps them write, modify and understand code from the terminal. Its new “Buddy” feature brings an AI pet into the workspace, adding companionship and a more emotive design. The move also reflects how developer tools are expanding beyond pure productivity to focus more broadly on user experience.
As of July 20, 2026, Buddy had first attracted attention after being inadvertently leaked through Claude Code. Anthropic later formally released the feature, which quickly sparked discussion among developers. Existing reports did not disclose an exact launch date, development costs or pricing plans, focusing instead on the integration of a virtual pet into terminal-based workflows.

Anthropic introduced Buddy as an April Fools’ Day Easter egg in Claude Code v2.1.89 on April 1, 2026. The feature let users hatch an ASCII pet in their terminal with its own name, species and personality, and interact with it while coding. Although Buddy generated no direct revenue, it came to symbolize developers’ emotional connection to the tool and highlighted questions about community governance when AI products remove small features.
Anthropic removed Buddy in Claude Code v2.1.97 on April 9, 2026, and said on GitHub that it had no plans to restore the feature for now. A petition drew more than 80 reactions and 23 comments, while at least eight Issues were consolidated. Some users refused to upgrade or downgraded to an earlier version, while developers used MCP to build open-source alternatives. No transaction amount was involved.
