UK Study Finds Generative AI Has Yet to Spark Crime Revolution, Mostly Fuels Low-Level Automated Scams and Spam
Research by the University of Cambridge and other UK institutions found that generative AI has yet to transform the cybercrime landscape or rapidly give low-skilled users advanced hacking capabilities. For now, AI serves primarily as a productivity tool for existing criminal operations, cutting the cost of producing copy and conducting high-volume activity. Its use is concentrated in SEO fraud, social-media bots and romance scams.
After analyzing 97,895 conversations on underground forums, the researchers found that criminal communities were likewise frustrated by the proliferation of low-quality AI content. The finding suggests the tools are producing spam at scale rather than driving a technological revolution. The latest reports did not disclose the study's publication date or any amounts involved, but the evidence indicates that AI is mainly enhancing low-level automated fraud and has yet to produce a clear improvement in sophisticated attack capabilities.
