DeepSeek Forms Team to Challenge Claude Code
DeepSeek is expanding beyond large-language-model development into agentic coding, a fast-growing segment where AI systems can plan tasks, edit software and execute multi-step development workflows. The push puts the Chinese artificial-intelligence company more directly against Anthropic’s Claude Code and other coding agents as model developers compete for enterprise users, software engineers and a larger role in automated programming.
DeepSeek is assembling a new unit called the “Harness Team” to develop frontier AI agent products aimed at the coding market. It also announced an upgrade to its flagship V4 Pro model intended to strengthen agentic processing and accelerate its move into software automation. As of Aug. 13, 2026, the company had not disclosed the team’s size, its investment budget or a firm launch date for the planned products.

Development is being led by Cui Tianyi, described as a former Jane Street expert. DeepSeek has not disclosed the number of testers, a public launch date, pricing or the amount invested in the project.
