Taiwan Advances SEMI E187 Cybersecurity Standard to Bolster Semiconductor and AI Chip Supply Chains

SEMI E187 is the world’s first international cybersecurity standard for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Taiwan’s Administration for Digital Industries is promoting its adoption, with a focus on equipment operating systems, network connectivity and access controls. For foundries such as TSMC, a breach of manufacturing equipment could disrupt AI chip and server supplies. Standardized safeguards are therefore critical to protecting core production processes and the resilience of global supply chains.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs said in the 2026 Taiwan Cybersecurity Yearbook that Taiwan is shifting from an adopter of international standards to a rule-maker, using SEMI E187 to strengthen semiconductor equipment security. The policy priority for 2026 is to integrate cybersecurity requirements into wafer manufacturing and equipment supply chains to protect AI chip production.
