Meta Strikes Multibillion-Dollar Deal for AWS Graviton5 Chips to Support AI Growth
Meta has long relied on its own data centers to support Facebook, Instagram and generative AI, but agentic AI requires large volumes of real-time, multistep processing, driving up demand for CPUs and inference infrastructure. Adopting Amazon Web Services’ internally developed Arm-based processors could improve cost efficiency and energy use while diversifying Meta’s computing resources and reducing its dependence on any single chip supplier.
Meta and AWS announced a multiyear agreement worth billions of dollars on April 24, 2026, without disclosing the exact amount. The initial deployment will comprise tens of millions of Graviton5 cores. Based on 192 cores per chip, that equates to more than 100,000 chips, with capacity to expand further, making Meta one of the world’s largest Graviton customers.

Meta is expanding its data-center computing capacity to train and deploy generative AI while reducing its reliance on NVIDIA GPUs. The order, which outside estimates say could be worth as much as $100 billion, gives AMD’s Instinct GPUs and ROCm platform the backing of a major customer and bolsters its prospects of challenging NVIDIA’s market dominance.
AMD and Meta announced a five-year partnership on February 24, 2026, under which Meta will deploy up to 6 GW of Instinct GPUs. The first 1 GW is expected to ship in the second half of 2026, using customized MI450 chips, EPYC “Venice” processors and the Helios architecture. AMD also granted Meta warrants for up to 160 million shares, which could give it a stake approaching 10% if specified milestones are met.
