OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Desktop Preview for Linux

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-12 · Last active 2026-08-12

OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop software was previously available on macOS and Windows, leaving Linux as a notable gap in its cross-platform strategy. The operating system is widely used by software developers and in server environments, making native support important for reaching the open-source community. The move also follows Anthropic’s June 30, 2026, beta release of Claude Desktop for Ubuntu and Debian.

OpenAI released a preview of its ChatGPT desktop app for Linux on Aug. 11, 2026, offering native .deb and .rpm packages. The initial release supports Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. The app brings ChatGPT, Codex, collaborative work features and an integrated browser into one desktop interface, extending OpenAI’s application lineup across the three major personal-computing operating systems.
