Riot Executive’s Departure Highlights Bitcoin Miners’ AI Data Center Challenges
Riot Platforms, one of North America’s largest bitcoin miners, has sought in recent years to repurpose its existing power assets for AI and high-performance computing data centers to diversify away from mining revenue. But while mining sites prioritize low-cost electricity, AI facilities require backup power, high-density cooling and stringent operational reliability, making conversions more difficult and capital-intensive.
Jonathan Gibbs became Riot’s first chief data center officer on June 1, 2025, but left on April 12, 2026, after less than a year in the role. His departure meant forfeiting performance options with a target grant value of about $10 million, while more than 1.1 million unvested restricted shares, then valued at about $18.7 million, were also canceled.
