RTX 5090 Can Crack About 60% of MD5 Password Hashes Within an Hour

NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 5090 in January 2025. Its powerful parallel-processing capabilities not only improve gaming and AI performance but also lower the barrier to brute-force password cracking. MD5 has known security flaws, and passwords stored with it can potentially be recovered quickly after a website suffers a data breach.

Cybersecurity company Kaspersky said its analysis found that attackers using an RTX 5090 or rented cloud GPU computing power could crack about 60% of MD5 password hashes within an hour. The research shows that modern hardware is accelerating the obsolescence of traditional hashing technology. Users should instead adopt longer, random and unique passwords.
