OpenAI Revenue Miss Raises Questions Over Data Center Expansion and Financing
OpenAI has supported ChatGPT and new models by making large-scale advance commitments for computing capacity while continuing to plan data center expansion. Such long-term commitments can run into the tens of billions of dollars and depend on rapid growth in subscription and enterprise revenue. If cash flow falls behind, the risks could extend to Oracle and server suppliers including Quanta and Wistron.
As of July 19, 2026, reports said new-user growth and revenue had fallen short of internal targets. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar had warned about the company's ability to meet future construction payments, while the board was reviewing Chief Executive Sam Altman's decision to keep expanding computing capacity as growth slowed. OpenAI denied that its business was weakening. The concerns briefly pushed Oracle shares down 4% and also cast doubt over about $10 billion in computing-capacity purchases.
