SoftBank Slashes TSMC Stake by 71.5%, Raises $270 Million
SoftBank Group has built its investment identity around technology and artificial intelligence, while its ownership of chip designer Arm gives its portfolio decisions added significance for semiconductor investors. TSMC is the world’s leading producer of advanced chips, making any sharp change in SoftBank’s exposure a closely watched signal of how the Japanese conglomerate is balancing AI ambitions, chip holdings and capital allocation.
SoftBank cut its TSMC position by 71.5% in the second quarter of 2026, raising about $269.8 million from the sale. During the same period, the group initiated positions in U.S. financial institution Capital One Financial and family location-services provider Life360. The moves reduced its exposure to a major chip manufacturer while adding holdings in financial services and consumer technology, renewing scrutiny of SoftBank’s broader semiconductor and AI investment strategy.
