Bitcoin Retail Sentiment Still Crucial After Institutional Entry, Swan Bitcoin CEO Says
The launch of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 put institutions including BlackRock and Fidelity in the spotlight and fueled debate over whether institutional investors now drive prices. Swan Bitcoin CEO Cory Klippsten said ETFs are merely wrappers whose holders are largely retail investors. The funds must still buy and custody Bitcoin, removing supply from the market, so retail demand and sentiment remain critical.
In a BitcoinVegas 2026 interview on May 30, 2026, Klippsten cited Farside data showing $2.9 billion in net outflows from spot Bitcoin ETFs since May 15. Bitcoin fell about 9.5% over the same period to $73,630, while the Fear & Greed Index stood at 23, indicating “extreme fear.” He also cut his estimate of the probability that Bitcoin would reach a new high in 2026 from about 50% to 20%–25%.
