The history behind this eventSpaceX Plans 10-GW Texas Solar Factory to Power Space-Based AI Data Centers
SpaceX plans to build a solar-cell manufacturing plant in Bastrop, Texas, with annual capacity of 10 gigawatts. The facility is intended to provide a stable power source for Elon Musk’s envisioned space-based AI data centers. As electricity demand from AI computing surges, energy supply has become a key bottleneck for major infrastructure expansion.
SpaceX recently secured a permit for the factory, which will house production lines across two floors in Bastrop. Reports have not disclosed the approval date, construction timetable or investment amount. Musk said solar energy is central to overcoming AI’s energy constraints and plans to sharply expand U.S. domestic capacity within three years of the factory starting operations.
