Google Pushes Original Content as AI Reshapes SEO
Generative AI has sharply reduced the cost of summarizing public information, rewriting familiar arguments and producing articles at scale, weakening the value of interchangeable content built mainly to capture search traffic. Google is placing greater emphasis on material grounded in originality, first-hand experience and expert judgment — attributes that are harder for AI systems or rival publishers to reproduce and more likely to satisfy a reader’s specific needs.
The emerging SEO concept is often described as “Non-Commodity Content”: reporting or analysis that offers information AI cannot easily infer from existing pages. Examples include original data, hands-on product testing, named expert views and conclusions based on direct experience. Google has not announced a specific launch date, financial threshold or separate ranking program for the concept, but its guidance points to a broader shift in search competition from publishing volume toward distinctiveness, usefulness and credibility.
