Coinbase Commerce Withdrawal Tool’s Seed-Phrase Request Raises Security Concerns
Coinbase Commerce is Coinbase’s self-custodial payment tool for merchants accepting cryptocurrency. A seed phrase serves as the master key to a wallet; if exposed, assets can be transferred and are usually unrecoverable. An official page’s request for users to enter seed phrases in plain text raised security concerns because it risked teaching users to mistake a typical phishing tactic for a legitimate procedure.
On March 19, 2026, SlowMist founder Cos and on-chain investigator ZachXBT said the Coinbase Commerce withdrawal page was asking users to enter their seed phrases. The related Coinbase Help guide subsequently appeared to have been removed. Coinbase said it was investigating but has not explained the request or reported any loss of funds. The service is scheduled to shut down on March 31 as Coinbase shifts users to Coinbase Business.
