Low-Cost Chinese AI Models Draw Overseas Users, UBS Says

Competition in generative AI is increasingly shifting beyond model performance to inference costs and the pace of global adoption. UBS says Chinese developers have gained an edge by offering models at sharply lower prices, helping them attract users outside China. That cost advantage could intensify pressure on global AI pricing while broadening access to services that require substantial computing capacity.

Chinese AI models cost just 15% to 20% as much to use as comparable US offerings, according to the latest UBS report. Although efficiency gains are reducing the computing resources needed for each individual task, lower prices are driving a surge in overall usage. UBS expects that expansion to sustain growth in demand for data centers, computing infrastructure and AI chips.
