VS Code Adds AI Agent Host for Multi-Window Collaboration

Microsoft is pushing GitHub Copilot beyond code completion toward an agent that can plan and carry out multi-step development work inside Visual Studio. The shift matters for enterprise software teams seeking to apply AI while preserving internal engineering standards. A unified software development kit, organization-specific instructions and dedicated capabilities for Microsoft’s .NET framework and Azure cloud platform are designed to make Copilot more useful within established coding, review and deployment workflows.

In its July 2026 Visual Studio update, Microsoft strengthened the Agent features in GitHub Copilot Chat and introduced a unified SDK alongside support for custom organizational instructions. The release also added built-in .NET and Azure skills. Developers can now ask Copilot to analyze code changes on another Git branch without leaving their current branch, reducing context switching and making it easier to review differences and assess the potential impact of proposed changes.

Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code continues to integrate generative AI into software development, allowing developers to delegate some coding and editing tasks to AI agents. As agents take on multiple repositories and sessions simultaneously, developers increasingly need a centralized way to monitor progress, review changes and reduce the risk of unintended edits.

Microsoft introduced a preview of Agents Window in VS Code 1.120, providing a separate window for centrally managing Copilot and Claude Agent sessions across multiple projects. The release also adds a changes panel that lets developers track files and code differences modified by agents, review them before applying the changes and maintain greater control over parallel multi-agent workflows.

Visual Studio Code is a Microsoft-led code editor and a key gateway to AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot. As agents take on longer-running tasks involving changes across multiple files, testing and debugging, their ability to retain context, add tools and track execution status has become critical to the practical adoption of AI-assisted development.

Microsoft released the February edition of VS Code 1.110 on March 4, 2026. It introduces experimental agent plugins that can package skills, commands, MCP servers and hooks. Plans created by the Plan agent can be retained in session memory, while context is automatically compacted as it approaches capacity; users can also trigger compaction manually with /compact. The release also adds a preview Agent Debug panel and agent browser tools, allowing AI agents to operate applications and verify the results of their changes.
