Virtu, Tradeweb Complete Onchain Repo With Marshall Islands Digital Bond
Repurchase agreements are a key source of short-term funding in financial markets, allowing institutions to borrow against securities and later buy them back. Virtu Financial and Tradeweb used USDM1, a digital sovereign bond issued by the Marshall Islands, as collateral, demonstrating how a native government asset can support institutional financing directly on a blockchain network.
Virtu, Tradeweb and other participants recently completed the first fully onchain repo backed by USDM1 on Canton Network. The transaction combined sovereign digital collateral with atomic settlement, synchronizing the transfer of assets and funds, and completed the full repo cycle within 10 minutes. The report did not disclose the transaction’s value or the exact execution date.
